this proposal had been awarded third place in the master plan international competition for the city of andalsnes, norway. stockholm-based architecture office jagnefalt milton proposed a city based on existing abandoned rails – rolling hotels, rolling public bath and rolling concert hall. ( how fun! )

the jury awarded their office for a proposal where existing and new rail road would provide the base for new building that could be rolled back and forth depending on seasons and situations. the jury was impressed by their proposals which didn’t proposed new city blocks, or anything else, instead, jagnefalt milton office focused entirely on the existing rail road network and created something unexpected from it.

this is the most simple yet playful competition entry I’ve seen in the past couple months – love the concept that creates something new from something old/existing. this is the true realization of sustainability with no green-wash…

and wait, i know, now you start to run the skeptical side of how possible to build a city on rails. i will suggest (as usual) simply enjoy the beautiful, little bit surreal atmosphere which i found it’s really inspirational and made you think about what can we do to our next generation of city, rather than building human-less mega city blocks.
