i realized many ” successful” playgrounds are not necessarily cool or creative… kids get entertained pretty easily in some way ( though sometimes they are hard to please, too ),ramps up and down, castle to hide, ropes to grab and climb, plus their imagination, and that’s all.

imagination, I just mentioned.

today i am going to share the type of playground based on children’s imagination! one of my favorite museum in New York, Cooper-Hewitt Museum. if you had been there, it’s hard to not fall in love with its amazing garden… sort of a secret backyard ( or frontyard, depends on how you define it ) in a busy city. simple and peaceful. this past May 29, Imagination Playground set up their play “box” as part of the museum family program.

many ways to play those blocks, as they described on their website,

” Imagination Playground is a breakthrough playspace concept conceived and designed by architect David Rockwell to encourage child-directed, unstructured free play. With a focus on loose parts, Imagination Playground offers a changing array of elements that allows children to constantly reconfigure their environment and to design their own course of play. Giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric and crates overflow with creative potential for children to play, dream, build and explore endless possibilities. “

on one Saturday earlier this May, they also brought two boxes to Highline, as a pop up playground.

and just recently, after six years research, the first permanent Imagination Playground is opened!

this is a collaboration between New York City Dept. of Parks and Recreation and Rockwell Group. located at Burling Slip, near South Street Seaport, lower Manhattan.

same idea, but with more permanent structure, like this long long ramp surrounded the playground. playing with water is always a popular theme in summer time… here you can see how creative kids can be, to play their own way!
